Many human processes produce waste. Before this waste is disposed of, it generally needs to be treated in some way. The exact method of treatment is dependant upon the nature of the waste. One example of waste treatment is the burning of fossil fuels. Fossil fuels are the fossilized remains of prehistoric plants and animals in the form of coal, oil, and natural gas. All fossil fuels contain sulfur and sulfur oxides as an impurity. High-grade fossil fuels have low levels of impurities and has a wide range of uses, from heating homes to powering industrial factories. This oxides the sulfur and releases the sulfur oxides into the atmosphere as a gas. These sulfur oxides can then react with water vapor in the clouds to produce acid rain.
