A voice mail system uses computer technology similar to electronic mail to answer telephone calls, and route and store resulting messages. When a call is answered by a voice mail system, the voice message is digitized (converted to electronic signals) and stored on magnetic disks attached to computers or computers themselves. The call receiver enters his "mailbox" by punching in his or her security code to retrieve his or her messages. After listening to the messages, callers can save or delete the messages. A voice mail system can save many more messages than a stand-alone answering machine can. Time and date information can also be recorded and retrieved.
