1935-1971
Soviet engineer and cosmonaut who was flight engineer of the first crew to live aboard a space station. Volkov designed spacecraft and trained cosmonauts before becoming a cosmonaut himself in 1966. He flew aboard Soyuz 7 in 1969 and spent 23 days on Salyut 1, the world's first station, in 1971. Volkov died, along with test engineer Viktor Patsayev and mission commander Georgy Dobrovolsky, when the spacecraft returning them to Earth depressurized.
