1867-1953

Russian-born American chemist who was one of the first to investigate high-pressure catalytic reactions of hydrocarbons. He also developed a process for manufacturing high-octane gasoline. Ipatieff was an officer in the Imperial Russian Army and later attended the Mikhail Artillery Academy in St. Petersburg, where he was a professor of chemistry. In 1930, he took a position with the Universal Oil Products Company in Chicago where he developed his catalytic processes for industrial use.
