In 1975 Sony introduced the Betamax home videocassette recorder (VCR), allowing television viewers to tape their favorite shows to watch at a later date and time. In a 1984 study conducted by Nielsen, television advertisers and network executives were shocked to learn that 49 percent of TV watchers were not only using their VCRs to watch their favorite shows at a later time but to fast-forward through commercials.
