The Conflict
Turkey, geographically situated with a foothold in both the East and the West, has submitted for membership in the European Union (EU). Before being admitted, Turkey's institutions and practices must meet with EU standards. Previously denied membership in the European Union, many Turks felt that Turkey was being judged on criteria different from other countries that were more firmly established as "Western" nations. There are also groups within Turkey that are anti-Western and assert the country is firmly in the East.
