English physician who in 1843 was the first to propose the use of rubber gloves in surgery. This advancement in medicine reduced dramatically the risk of infection and the spread of microorganisms during surgical procedures. He received his medical degree from Cambridge in 1825. Following graduation, he practiced medicine in London until 1870. He was also a professor and lecturer of medicine at Royal College and Kings College in London.
