Scottish explorer and surveyor known for his extensive surveying journeys into the interior of Australia as Surveyor-General of New South Wales. From 1831-46 Mitchell conducted four expeditions in eastern Australia, exploring and surveying areas such as the Darling River (1835), the Murray River (1836), Discovery Bay (1836), and the Barcoo River (1846). Mitchell kept detailed journals of his explorations and published several books, including The Australian Geography (1850).
