Country Overview

Introduction

Serbia and Montenegro, a country in southeastern Europe, was created in 2003 from the eastern part of the former Yugoslavia. At the country's southwestern tip is the Adriatic Sea, while surrounding the remaining border are seven other countries: Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as Croatia, to the west; Hungary to the north; Romania to the northeast; Bulgaria to the east; and Macedonia and Albania to the south.

In a relatively short period of time, from 1918 to 2003, the region was politically transformed several times. The Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes was established in 1918, and its successor, the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, existed from 1929 until its collapse in 1941. The socialist state of the Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia was formed in 1943 and was officially proclaimed with a constitution in 1946. This...
