d. A.D. 53
Christian evangelist who was one of Jesus' original disciples and who traveled extensively as a missionary. He was called "Doubting Thomas" because he insisted on personally verifying Jesus' identity after the Resurrection. He traveled to Parthia and to India. Most of what is known about his later life is contained in apocryphal literature. It is said that he was martyred on St. Thomas Mount near Madras, India, after founding a church, which still exists there.
