American biophysicist who revolutionized the science of radiology imaging with his invention of the whole body computed tomography (CT) scanner. Ledley also pioneered the development of automated chromosome analysis for prenatal diagnosis of birth defects. He authored numerous articles, primarily concerned with the use of computers in biology and medicine and biomedical engineering, as well as several books, and holds at least 5 biomedical patents.
