American computer scientist who contributed toward advances in the use of computers for engineering and scientific applications. Benner was involved in the development of linear and nonlinear optical systems, used in spectroscopic techniques for the characterization of materials. In addition, he has worked on optical pattern recognition, used by computerized systems to read typed or written characters or to use cameras to help interact with people or their surroundings.
