1876-1936

Austro-Swedish physician recognized for his work on the physiology of the inner ear. Born in Vienna, Austria, he received his doctor of medicine degree from the University of Vienna in 1900. His interest in the structure of the inner ear and its effect on balance led to a 1914 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine. He also related the cerebellum of the brain with balance and coordination. Barany went to the University of Uppsala to teach otology and practice clinical medicine. He won several national prizes in Sweden and died in Uppsala.
