American inventor and industrialist who invented the first successful rotary printing press. His first press was used by the Philadelphia Public Ledger beginning in 1847, and a later, improved model—the Hoe web perfecting press—was first used by the New York Tribune. The web printing press formed the basis for newspaper printing for many years.
