1933-

American mathematician known for his work in classical mathematics, especially in the area of special functions. His work attracted attention in 1984 for a paper that provided a link to the Bieberbach conjecture, a problem having to do with functions of a complete variable. He earned his master's degree in 1956 from Harvard University and his Ph.D. in 1961 from Princeton University. He taught at the University of Chicago before joining the University of Wisconsin.
