Finnish-born Swedish physiologist who was a corecipient (with George Wald and Haldan Hartline) of the 1967 Nobel Prize in medicine for their work on the biochemical and electrical processes of vision. Later in his life, his research focused on movement, specifically the role of muscle spindles and tendon organs. This work helped determine the neural pathways and processes in muscles. He received his M.D. degree in 1927 from the University of Helsinki.
