Psychoactive is a general term that came into use about 1961. It describes a substance that affects the central nervous system, producing changes in mental activity and/or behavior. A psychoactive substance or process may affect the way an individual thinks or the manner in which the environment is perceived or experienced; it may change the behavior of an individual in a given situation.
