Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) refers to a wide range of physical and psychological symptoms associated with the menstrual cycle which most commonly manifest seven to 14 days before the onset of menstruation and may last up to a week following. Seventy to 90% of women experience PMS; 40% have symptoms severe enough to interfere with their daily activities, and 10% are debilitated by them. While the exact cause of PMS is unclear, hormone fluctuation, decrease in endorphin levels, alterations in the neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine, emotional and physical stress, changes in the metabolism of vitamins, and clinical depression all appear to be influencing factors. Recommended treatments include nutrition, exercise, and medication.
