French physician, author, and dentist who is known as the "Father of Scientific Dentistry." During his career, Fauchard recognized the importance of good dental hygiene, wrote two influential books, and was among the first to remove all diseased parts of a tooth before filling the resulting cavity. He was also the first to use gold inlays to fill the tooth after performing a root canal. His invention of the dental drill was equally influential.
