1906-1977

Hungarian-American engineer who pioneered the first color television. From 1936-40, while working for the Columbia Broadcasting System, he designed a color television system that utilized a rotating, three-color disk and a cathode ray tube. In 1948, with the invention of vinyl, he developed the long-play record that used a groove of 0.003 inch (0.008 cm). This enabled the equivalent of six 78-rpm records to be compressed into one record and led to the availability of stereo recordings.
