German zoologist who did important work in the area of symbiosis. Symbiosis is the process by which two species live together in a mutually beneficial arrangement. Buchner helped elucidate the manner in which this situation can occur and described many symbiotic arrangements that are found in nature. In particular, Buchner described the transmission of symbiotic yeasts from one generation of scale insect to the next.
