Participatory design is a method of giving the end user of a product a part in the construction and implementation of the design. It aims to bring together all the stakeholders in a project (users, designers, managers, etc.) at the earliest possible stage of development, before anything is set in stone. Often the method involves game-playing exercises, using pen and paper mock-ups, to help define how a product will be used. Using paper allows for many different designs to be imagined and for any number of changes to be made immediately and at minimal cost.
