An oscilloscope produces a wavelike display of electrical signals. Typically the display is a cathode ray tube, such as that used in a personal computer, though usually smaller. The oscilloscope displays the value of a voltage as it changes with time. Since many physical measurements can be converted to a voltage via a transducer, the oscilloscope serves as a very versatile tool for a researcher who wants to analyze the behavior of his system, and they are widely used in laboratories.

An oscilloscope performs five functions. (1) It captures the electronic sample that is fed into it, (2) it provides the ability to view this sample as a function of time, (3) it allows measurement of the electronic signal, (4) it provides the ability to analyze the electronic signal, and (5) it provides the ability to store or print the results of the display screen. Typical applications for an oscilloscope are electronic circuit...
