Greek physician who dedicated his life to compiling the works of his predecessors and preserving existing medical knowledge. Oribasius was a prolific and influential medical writer, but he was not an original thinker. His compilations are of great importance because they include the works of ancient authors who would have been totally forgotten, if not for Oribasius. His compilations of works in medicine, hygiene, therapeutics, and surgery from Hippocrates to his own times contain selections from medical works that no longer exist and would otherwise be completely lost to history.
