Russian mathematician who has developed applied mathematics techniques. Oleinik earned a doctorate from the Institute of Mathematics at Moscow State University, where she has since taught. In 1973 she became head of the Department of Differential Equations. Oleinik also specializes in algebraic geometry and mathematical physics. She applies mathematics to heat distribution and elasticity problems. A prolific author, Oleinik has received numerous prizes recognizing her mathematical achievements. She has also presented the 1996 Association for Women in Mathematics Emmy Noether Lecture.
