English botanist and microscopist who was one of the founders of plant anatomy. His pioneering text, The Anatomy of Vegetables Begun (1672) described the structure of bean seeds, the existence of cells, and introduced many of the terms used to describe the parts of plants. In The Anatomy of Plants (1682), he discussed the anatomy of flowers, the microscopic structure of plant tissues, and suggested that the stamen functioned as the male sex organ of plants and the pistil as the female organ.
