American surgeon and professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School who suggested that a tumor, which is an abnormal mass of tissue in the body, might release a substance that promotes the growth of blood vessels, a substance he named tumor angiogenesis factor. Folkman received his B.S. from Ohio State University in 1953, and he graduated with an M.D. from Harvard Medical School in 1957.
