Japanese-Canadian mathematician whose work on sporadic simple groups helped to advance this part of group theory significantly. Simple groups are those with no normal subgroups and are the building blocks for all groups. Sporadic simple groups, in contrast, have other properties that make them unique. Mathematicians do not yet know if sporadic simple groups are actually part of an as-yet unknown family of groups of if they are truly "exceptional" groups. Suzuki's contribution lay in helping to describe fully some of these sporadic simple groups, known as the Suzuki Groups.
