Yes. In fact, silicon is found in 25 percent of the Earth's crust. First discovered in 1822 by J. J. Berzelius of Sweden, silicon is an element found in many mineral compounds, including mica, quartz, and talc. In its natural state, it appears metallic in luster and has a reddish- brown or black color. It is used mostly in metal alloys such as cast iron and steel, as well as in lubricants and glass. A small amount of silicon is mined each year to be purified and used in the manufacturing of semiconductors and integrated circuits.
