Byzantine philosopher and student of Proclus (410?-485) who wrote commentaries on mathematics and astronomy. Marinus apparently came from Samaria in Judea, and studied in Athens before taking Proclus's place as director of the Academy. His works include an introduction to Euclid's (c. 325-c. 250 B.C.) Data; Life of Proclus; and two astronomical texts, one on the Milky Way and the other a correction of Theon's (c. 335-c. 400) rules for direction of parallax in longitude.
