Although a minor criminal, Margie Dean is remembered as one of the first getaway drivers in the history of bank robbery in the United States. Killed in her car during a shootout with police, she died just as Bonnie and Clyde (see entry) did—some sixteen years earlier.

A getaway driver

Dean was born Margie Cellano in a ghetto in Paris, France, in 1896. As a young girl she emigrated to New York City and quickly turned to shoplifting. Having left New York City for Chicago, Illinois, she was arrested for stealing diamonds from a jewelry store. While serving out her sentence at Joliet Penitentiary in Illinois, she met inmate Eva Lewis, who was a member of a criminal gang headed by Frank “Jumbo” Lewis and Dale Jones.
