American physicist who in 1915 discovered that the germanium crystal could be used to convert alternating current (AC) into direct current (DC). This would become the basis of the integrated circuit, a miniature electric circuit packaged as a single unit with the input, output, and power-supply connections self-contained. Integrated circuits are used in computers as memory chips.
