Swedish mathematician who founded and edited the journal Acta Mathematica for 45 years, and who made important contributions in the area of mathematical analysis. His contributions included work on the general theory of functions and investigations into the relationship between dependent and independent variables. Mittag-Leffler was not only a gifted mathematician, but possessed the finest mathematical library in the world and was widely respected by his peers both professionally and personally. During his life, he was honored by virtually every mathematical society in the world.
