French mathematician who introduced discontinuous functions and first considered the concept of calculus as operational symbols (operators). Arbogast was interested in the philosophy of mathematics as well as its practice. He started and maintained a classification system for some of the outstanding papers of his time, forming an exceptionally important collection that is still widely used. His introduction of operators in calculus helped to standardize the field, making many discoveries more readily accessible to other mathematicians.
