American physician who advanced orthopedic surgery in the United States. Sayre completed a medical degree at New York City's College of Physicians and Surgeons and became the first chair of orthopedic surgery in the country, teaching at Bellevue Hospital's medical college. He devised a plaster cast for spinal curvatures and a shoe for club feet. Sayre wrote several books and traveled to Europe, sharing his innovative methods. He was president of the American Medical Association in 1880.
