Dutch mathematician who was instrumental in laying the foundation for the mathematical study of economics. His Elements of Pure Economics and other works attempted to establish economics as a branch of mathematics, while also advocating state nationalization of land and the abolition of taxes. His work was well received in America and Italy, but was spurned in Britain and France, though later received posthumous appreciation.
