German scholar who in his Buch der Natur (1349-50) stated that earthquakes are the result of winds accumulating in the earth's interior and forcing their way outward. Later printed, the book went into several editions and constitutes an excellent example of the organic concept of nature—an inheritance from Aristotle—that prevailed in much late medieval Western thought.
