American astronomer who was the first to detect radio emissions from Jupiter. This was a surprising discovery because, previously, no planets were known to emit radio waves. Through this discovery, much was learned about Jupiter's magnetic field and its interactions with charged particles from the Sun and elsewhere. In addition, this made it clear that planets could emit radio waves, a property previously thought limited to stars and galaxies.
