1917-1998
Japanese-American mathematician who received his Ph.D. in 1945 from Tokyo University. He was a member of the Institute of Advanced Studies at Princeton (1951-52) and taught at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Princeton University. He is known for his Iwasawa theory, a work on the theory of algebraic number fields, which won the American Mathematical Society's Cole award in 1962. He was a member of the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Society of Japan and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
