Internationally renowned geneticist who developed the first prenatal and carrier test for the muscle wasting disease Duchenne muscular dystrophy, paving the way for identification of the mutated gene. Her research has also led to the mapping and characterization of other disease genes, including spinal muscular atrophy, the leading form of infant mortality. In 1995 Davies was elected chair of the department of biochemistry at Oxford University.
