German physiologist who made landmark studies of the circulation, invented the kymograph and a blood-pump for sampling gases in blood, and pioneered the graphic method in physiology. Ludwig contributed to our understanding of the secretion of the urine, introduced revolutionary methods for the study of the respiration, blood circulation, and the nerves. He was also a popular and generous teacher who allowed his students to publish collaborative research under their own names.
