English physician whose research helped describe the causes and effects of African sleeping sickness. While working at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, Dutton and Robert Mitchell Forde isolated a parasitic flagellate protozoan (a trypanosome) from the blood of an English shipmaster. Dutton named the parasite Trypanosoma gambiense.
