Joseph Dulin’s long and illustrious career as an educator can be summed up as a quest to help at-risk kids. In Detroit and Ann Arbor, Michigan, the visionary educator transformed embattled institutions into outstanding schools. The secret to his success was to create within the school a family structure, consisting of staff, students, parents, and community members. Dulin assumed the role of the watchful, caring, and firm father figure—encouraging and challenging “his children” to do their best. He has been credited with helping transform hundreds of troubled youths from potential dropouts into academic achievers.
