Even before he reached North America, John Smith had led a life full of adventure and danger. His legendary encounter with Pocahontas is just one of many exciting episodes found in several books he wrote about his own life. Smith’s accounts of his adventures have not always been believed since they are quite flattering to him. There is no proof, however, that his stories are untrue.

Early years as a soldier

Smith’s life as an explorer began early. He worked as a merchant’s apprentice until his father died in 1596.
