1761-1821

Scottish civil engineer and architect who won fame as a bridge builder. Rennie constructed three bridges over the Thames River in London: the Waterloo Bridge (1811-17), the first in London to be built with a flat roadway; the Southwark Bridge (1814-19), the first metal bridge over the Thames; and London Bridge (1824-34), dissembled in 1968 and subsequently relocated to Lake Havana, Arizona. Rennie also designed the London docks and built dams, canals, and harbors.
