British biochemist who has devoted his academic life to the study of pharmacology, paying special interest to naturally compounds. Although his initial research centered on opiate-like chemicals, he has since centered his efforts on understanding the pharmacology biochemistry of naturally occurring neuroactive substances. Hughes received undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at the University of London but traveled to the United States to earn a Ph.D at Yale University. Hughes has been Director of the Parke-Davis Research Unit at Cambridge University, Senior Research Fellow at Wolfson College, and Honorary Professor of Neuropharmacology at Cambridge.
