American physician who is known for his invention of the heart and lung apparatus that was utilized to prevent heart and lung failure during open chest surgery. He also invented the Jefferson ventilator. He was a professor of surgery and director of surgical research at Jefferson Medical College from 1946-56 and was the recipient of the Research Achievement award from the American Heart Association in 1965.
