German chemist and physician important for having introduced medical and pharmaceutical chemistry into the university curriculum. In 1609 at the University of Marburg Hartmann initiated lectures and laboratory instruction on the chemical preparation of medicines. Later that year he was appointed professor of iatrochemistry at Marburg, the first chemistry professorship in Europe. Though he was not very successful as a physician, Hartmann's textbook on pharmaceutical chemistry, Praxis chymiatrica, went through many editions and was widely respected.
