Swiss naturalist who was among the first to postulate that fossils were the remains of animals. His treatise, Homo diluvii testis, was an important contribution to early thinking that fossils were something other than rock and mineral formations. Although Sheuzer did not make the leap to considering fossils the remains of extinct animals, he did help to set the stage for future work in this area.
