German chemist who in about 1675, along with Hennig Brand and Robert Boyle, isolated and identified phosphorus, the first new element to be discovered since antiquity. He was also noted for his writings on glassmaking and the chemistry of salts, and for his detailed descriptions of laboratory equipment and experimental techniques.
